We Never Forgot About Them

They say the good thing about hitting rock bottom is that the only way from there is up!
Well, even if not everything fell perfectly back into place, we got back on track, and on February 21st, we visited the village again. Honestly, it was only when I saw the children again — running around on the basketball court, their smiling faces — that I truly felt how much I had missed them. And not just the kids, but their parents too! The whole little community — all of them!

When we reached the edge of the small settlement, a sign caught my eye (written in Spanish): „Do not forget the teachings of your God, so that He will not forget your descendants.”
I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but as soon as I got home, the first thing I did was look it up — I was genuinely curious. I felt that this sentence spoke to me on multiple levels!

  • First of all — we didn’t forget about them! We were separated for a short little while, but we never forgot about our Sto Domingo.
  • It also moved me to see what kind of people live here — people whose faith is already visible at the very edge of their village, to anyone who comes.
  • I also felt a message worth passing on: education, the passing of knowledge, the protection of the next generation… this is everyone’s responsibility.

…And looking at the photo now, in hindsight: the dried-up bushes, the rusty frame, and the blue sky — there’s something raw and honestly beautiful about it.

One more thing worth mentioning from the visit. We were already getting ready to leave, saying our goodbyes, and as usual, we agreed to come back in two weeks. But then we received a very warm invitation — for the following Saturday, to a birthday party! One of the ladies was celebrating her husband’s birthday, and they invited us to come eat with them! It was a wonderful experience and, at the same time, a great honor! We happily accepted the invitation!

We are not a foundation.
We are not an NGO.
We are simply two people who saw poverty and felt a quiet certainty: we needed to do something — even if it was small. Even if it only brings a few smiles to a few children. Some people have already joined us, once or more than once.
And if anyone feels called to join  – in any way, at any time – we would be honored.
